On December 24, 2021, the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation approved the Federal Law «On the Accession of the Russian Federation to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications».
The Lisbon system allows requesting legal protection for an appellation of origin or geographical indication in all Member States through a single registration and a one-off payment of a single set of fees.
The accession to the Geneva Act contributes to increasing the level of the legal protection of regional brands, economic development of regions and support for local manufacturers, and expansion of Russia's participation in the global intellectual property protection systems.
The new rules will come into force in a year after the signing of the law by the president.
