The III International Conference of the Assembly of Eurasian Patent Attorneys was held June 11 to 13. More than 200 patent attorneys, IP lawyers, business representatives, and regulators attended.
The conference agenda focused on the question of how innovations will be protected in the EAEU over the next 5 years.

The main topics of the conference were as follows:
- Implementation of digital technologies in patent practice;
- Harmonization of legal systems and cross-border interaction;
- Prospects for legal protection of intellectual property in modern conditions.

Maria Makhlina, partner, head of the patent prosecution department of «A.Zalesov and Partners» moderated section No. 4 titled «5 years since implementing the Protocol on the Protection of Eurasian Industrial Designs» on June 12.
Together with experts from FIPS, EAPO and KazNIIS, Maria highlighted current issues of patent practice:
- How to combine an industrial design and a trademark;
- When is it beneficial to file a divisional application or convert an application;
- Current methods of assessing originality;
- The feasibility of partial protection and disclaimer with a review of relevant case law;
- Designs from a copyright and patent law perspectives.

The conference was attended by Aleksey Zalesov, Head of Intellectual Property Practice; Maria Makhlina, Head of the Patent Prosecution Department; and Yulia Dutikova, Head of the Group for patenting in the area of medicine and pharmaceuticals.
