On April 28, 2026, Maria Makhlina, Head of the Patent Department, took part in the session “R&D in the cosmetics industry: biotechnology, innovation, ingredients, raw materials for the production of perfumery and cosmetic products”, organized within the framework of the international exhibition Global Ingredients Show, and spoke on the topic “Features of intellectual property protection in the cosmetics industry”.
2,300 specialists participated in the exhibition, including leading ingredient and raw material manufacturers, suppliers and distributors, developers and technologists from manufacturing companies in the food, cosmetics and dietary supplement industries. Maria touched on the following topics:
- How to build reliable protection of intellectual property at all stages of the creation and introduction into civil circulation of a cosmetic product;
- What IP objects may arise during product development, how and when to register them correctly and who should be indicated as the author/applicant;
- Possibility of registering non-standard marks: fragrances, bottle shapes, color combinations;
- Frequent mistakes of applicants, risks associated with underestimating the importance of registering rights to their properties;
- How to avoid possible claims from third parties.
Particular attention was paid to the effective approach to working with contractors when creating cosmetic products (formulations, packaging, design), as well as judicial practice regarding intellectual property in the cosmetics industry. As part of an open dialogue with the cosmetics industry, ingredient and raw material producers Maria discussed the pressing issues facing cosmetics manufacturers in the area of intellectual property, and once again emphasized the importance of properly registering exclusive rights in advance.
