Patent attorneys from the Russian Federation, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan discussed current issues of intellectual property protection in Russia and abroad. Among the conference participants were patent attorneys from «A.Zalesov & Partners»: Aleksey Zalesov, Irina Ozolina, Maria Makhlina, Anastasia Kiriukhina, Julia Dutikova and Ivan Istomin. Aleksey Zalesov, Head of Intellectual Property Practice, moderated the «Inventions» section, which included a roundtable discussion on the following topics:

- Extension of pharmaceutical patents: specific aspects for various patents, differences in approaches between the Russian Federation and the Eurasian Association, and conclusions from recent IP court decisions;

- The Eurasian Pharmaceutical Registry: issues of use, data accuracy, amendments, and liability for data accuracy;

- Issues in assessing patentability when patenting pharmaceutical patents and challenging issued pharmaceutical patents; changes in approaches between the Russian Federation and the Eurasian Association. Consideration of current IP approaches;

- Issues of multiple patenting of the same patent. Markush formulas (general and more specific), compounds, forms of compounds, and individual objects;

- Using clinical trial results as a source of prior art: examination practices between the Russian Federation and the Eurasian Association, considering IP approaches;

- Approaches to assessing the patentability of polymorphs and other types of secondary patents.

At a roundtable discussion on inventions, Julia Dutikova highlighted the issue of using clinical trial results as prior art.

Anastasia Kiriukhina presented a report in the Trademarks section on «Appealing Rospatent Decisions on Granting Legal Protection to Trademarks: Issues in Interpreting Decisions and Current Practice».

In the final part of the conference, experts participated in a business simulation, «Court Hearing to Stop Utility Model Infringement». Among the key participants in the simulation were Maria Makhlina and Ivan Istomin, who represented the defendant.
