On October 17, 2023, the III Patent Congress, organized by the Russian national group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), was held at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation.
More than 250 participants attended the event in person, and more than 1400 viewers watched the online broadcast.
The Patent Congress was solemnly opened by the president of the Russian national AIPPI group Vladimir Biryulin, vice-president Dmitry Markanov, as well as the honorary president of the Russian national AIPPI group Aleksey Zalesov.
As part of the Third Patent Congress, leading speakers in the field of intellectual property discussed a wide range of issues on the most pressing topics, such as:
- Current problems of patenting and the development of judicial practice in validity disputes and patent infringement disputes in Russia and abroad;
- Protection of rights to trademarks and other means of individualization;
- Current issues of protecting industrial designs;
- Development of the Eurasian patent system;
- Patents in Pharma;
- Effective management of industrial property;
- Intellectual property popularization.
Heads of leading Russian pharmaceutical companies (Akrikhin, Valenta, Promomed, Pharmstandard), as well as international pharmaceutical companies, took part in the round table «Patents in Pharma». The speakers shared the main elements of their companies' patent strategies, discussed patent aspects of bringing a new medication into civil circulation, approaches to creating and protecting a patent portfolio in Russia and the EAEU countries, problems of entering the market after the expiration of a patent term (Day One Launch doctrine), discussed current problems of patent disputes practice in Pharma, and also shared their opinion on the Eurasian Patent Pharmaceutical Register and plans to create a patent pharmaceutical registry in Russia.
Representatives of the Russian and Eurasian patent offices, the vice-president of the Designers’ Union, a designer who creates collections using AI tools, as well as representatives of industry and the scientific community spoke at the round table «Protection of Industrial Design: Myths and Reality». The speakers discussed topics related to the limits of AI in the creation of industrial design objects, as well as the challenges facing the industry in connection with the use of the latest digital technologies in their creation, and shared strategies used to protect the rights to these objects. Representatives of Rospatent and the Eurasian Patent Office spoke about the possibilities for registering objects created in the digital environment, provided by the departments to applicants, as well as about the features of the examination and the procedure for challenging industrial designs. The round table also discussed the possibilities of judicial protection of an industrial design and the dualism of legal protection of design objects.

The IV Patent Congress is planned to be held in the fall of 2024.
